Three minutes a day, imitating a haenyeo's day.
About SUMBI
It asks what you left behind.
Why it was made
Read enough about the haenyeo — the women divers of Jeju — and the same three things keep coming back.
- The shallow water is kept empty for the oldest divers. It is called Halmang Badang.
- A diver who took a lot puts some into another's net, underwater, unasked and unrepaid. That is geseok.
- A big haul is not called skill. It is called good luck — meojeong.
Games are usually built the other way around. Take more, crown whoever took most, rank everyone. This one tries the opposite.
So it is built like this
- No rankings. Ranking a game that runs on luck is calling luck skill.
- Halmang Badang gives you nothing. You may go in. You come out empty-handed.
- The small ones stay. You get nothing for leaving them, and giving them away takes them off your record.
- Nothing is for sale. No payments, no paid retries, no rewarded ads.
Who made it
I am not a haenyeo and I do not live on Jeju. I do not know any working diver personally.
I read what is publicly available and build from it. Everything I read is listed on the sources page.
This is my own project. It has no connection to the haenyeo community or to any body on Jeju.
The pictures and the music were made with AI.
The two divers, the underwater backgrounds and the boat songs were generated with AI tools and edited by hand. The facts were not — every term, size, season and number came from the reading listed on the sources page. You should be able to tell which part is which, so it is written here.
If something is wrong
Something will be. I have been wrong several times, and fixed it because people told me.
If you see one — [email protected], or Threads @soombi.sori. I will fix it and write down what I fixed.
